After Having A Gallbladder Removal Procedure: What You Should Expect During Recovery

Different people respond in different ways after a gallbladder removal operation.

However, it’s sad but true that many patients who have their gallbladder removed feel much the same after their operation as they did before - at least for a while.

Doctors call this phenomenon “postcholecystectomy syndrome.” Cholecystectomy is a term medical personnel use for a gallbladder removal operation.

As many as 4 out of 10 people who have gallbladder removal surgery may have this happen following their operation. This occurs because the bile duct (a tube which transports bile between the liver and the gallbladder) has not been removed. So bile continues to accumulate there.

Here are some things to expect in the days after your gallbladder removal surgery.

Swelling and bruising will occur around the surgical area. This is easy to understand. No matter what type of surgery you have, there is some trauma to the body, and it will react with bruising and swelling.

Shortly after your surgery, you may also experience some discomfort as a result of the air that was puffed into your abdomen during the operation. This is done to give the surgeon more room to work under your skin. If this causes distress after your surgery, you doctor will probably be happy to recommend some pain-killing medications.

Moving around may become somewhat uncomfortable - especially when you’re trying to sit down or get up. At least for a few days, you may find “bathroom time” somewhat uncomfortable. Abdominal muscles will need at least several days to heal before soreness fades.

On the subject of bathrooms: be prepared to deal with some bloating, gas and diarrhea temporarily. Some people get constipation. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it happens to enough people after gallbladder removal surgery that you should be aware of it. Of course, your doctor may be able to prescribe or recommend something to help with this.

Keep in mind, it’s completely normal for your digestive system to be somewhat unpredictable. For this reason, it’s a good idea to follow your doctor’s dietary instructions. Low cholesterol foods and cholesterol-free foods tend to work best for most people.

Most patients also do better if they forego large meals for a while and concentrate oin eating smaller ones that are easier for the digestive system to handle. But be sure not to skip meals. Your body needs nutrients to recover.

As the weeks pass, you can start testing your digestive system to see how it responds to certain foods. Introduce some heavier foods and pay close attention to what happens.

Check with your doctor about exercise. It can help you recover faster, but you have to be smart about it - be careful not to overdo it. Remember that you have stitches and you need to be careful not to damage them. Your doctor can give you some on this matter.

Generally speaking, it’s important to keep your stitches dry, so talk to your doctor about baths and showers.

Most of the time, your doctor will want to do a follow up appointment in about one week. Another follow up appointment is likely in 4-5 weeks.
