2009 Copenhagen - UN Climate Change Conference

With the climate change conference scheduled to run in just a few weeks, I thought I would write about my ideas on the debates about to take place. I make my living as a realtor in Toronto, but that doesn’t mean that world issues do not concern me. Climate progression is one specific area that engages me.

From the 7th - 18th December this year Denmark is accommodating the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Climate Change mitigation is an pressing issue to be brought up by people attending the conference. The thoughts on climate change differ drastically so not everyone is looking at this from the same angle. Personal feelings are from one extreme to another.

Forceful advances in climate change mitigation were anticipated when Barack Obama became president. What people are wanting to find out is how can we move this problem forward. The Kyoto protocol, regarded to be a springboard for meetings of this kind, is less and less thought of, even by environmentalists themselves.

The reduced emission rates agreed to back in 1997 (and never accomplished) are about to be reevaluated. By the year 2020 its is anticipated that GHG emissions will be minimized by 20% based on the 2005 rates. While the public call for this decline they fail to remember that Kyoto didn’t work and that called for a 5% reduction on the 1990 levels. They request deep changes to economic and social structures (larger power and control in hands of local communities), in order to avoid climatic disaster.

The UN Climate change conference may produce some important decisions, but in my opinion they are unlikely to be anything spectacular. Having said all that, quite possibly, the most important thing to come out of it all is the activists are now getting together to try and make some improvements. This can only be great news as more voices shout maybe those at the conference in Copenhagen will pay attention.
